Title Tags
A ‘title tag’ is a hidden bit of code on your page. It is usually only visible to the user in two places. It is found in the title bar of your web browser and as the headline of a search engine result. It is beneficial to both user & search engine as it can contain the brand name but more importantly keywords and gives a quick description of the website. The title tag is the most important factor that you can influence when it comes to how search engines rank pages.
Header Tags
Header tags are html code used to headline topics on your web page and are usually categorised from <H1> to <H6> with <H1> being the most important and <H6> being the least. The <H1> tag is a page heading. This should be short, descriptive and contain keywords similar to the title tag to allow the user and search engine to see exactly what each page is about. <H2> tags are used as section headings.
Alt Tag
The Alt tag is html code used to give alternative text to an image. Alt tags convey what the graphic is for or about and contain relevant keywords. Adding alt tags to each image in your website allow them to be included in search engine results. It also increases the usability for people with text only web browsers and in some cases, people with disabilities.
Relevant Content
The importance of relevant content in your web page can’t be stressed enough because it fulfils so many different functions for your webpage. The regular use of keywords throughout your text indicates to search engines that your website contains relevant information relating to users search terms. It is also very important to the reader as they need to believe that the information you are sharing with them is of knowledgeable authority. The more trust they have in your web page, the more likely they are to visit again or buy your product etc.
Anchor Text
Anchor text is visible hyperlink text on a web page. It should contain keywords that describe what you are linking to. If the anchor text on your link reads “search engine optimisation services” then the user can expect to be directed to a page that shows information about search engine optimisation services. The usage of keywords in anchor text also enhances the search engine ranking of the page the link is on but the real gainer is the target page url. This knowledge can be used to your advantage when linking to other web pages within your site.
