Build a Wiki they’re great - if you can get them installed

I’ve just spent some time trying to get the new Equator Wiki up and running. Which will be cool when I get up and running. However have justr ealised we only have PHP 4.4.7 on our server and need at least PHP 5. This means that the wonderful Wikipedia software won’t work. So instead I’m trying out a number of alternative pieces of Wiki-Style programs to find one that will work.

  • PWP Wiki Processor - Didn’t work either got it up and running but was unable to add pages and a Wiki without the ability to add pages is pretty damn useless
  • Wikiwig - first of all I never noticed that I could change the installation instructions into English from French! (cheers for that Colin). so once I did that everything started to go well. then when I started trying to use it I got 500 Internal server errors all over the place - its great when it just goes wrong.
  • DokuWiki - Its all uploaded and again all I’m getting are 500 errors and file not found errors. At which point I realised I’d just uploaded the whole thing into a subdirectory! And had not fully deleted Wikiwig. So I deleted Wiki Wig and uploaded again - had to go for a cig at this point as this uploading was starting to drain my sanity! Oh and the directory in which WikiWig was installed wouldn’t fully delete - so I had to rename the bloody thing and pray it wasnt going to interfere with anything later on! Doku Wiki is now up and runnning however I need to get it to do some stuff before I’ll be happy with it:
    1. Make Better Title Tags - Hopefully there is a plugin - else I’m going to have to hack it
    2. Make Tidier URL Strings - has queries in it (which is less than elegant) so need a plugin for this else .htaccess and some scripts and going to need refined. Just tried the way they say to do it over at the Doku Wiki website and its giving me 500 server errors again….aaaarrrggghhh. I need coffee, have had green tea instead today and I think this is stopping my brain functioning on an adequate level today.

Other Stuff I found today

These things are far more Mr Happy that Wiki Madness

During my wiki pains I did notice some thing which have piqued my interest:

  • Postcode Lookup for Google Maps - I’ve been looking to do some google maps mashups (built an Internet Marketing Map of the UK - still in beta) but I was having to do Longitude and Latitude lookups. Apparently this script will allow me to do look ups by Postcode in Google Maps. will have a look over the next couple of days and see if its any use.
  • Graph Development Class in PHP - this may allow my to do some cool stuff with data taht I need in graphs - Excel graphs are pretty naff looking - will also allow me to do it dynamically from pre-stored data. am thinking that a Wordpress hack could be a cool way to utilise this.
