We just got a great gift for our new (5 day old) son Stanley. He now has a new favourite typeface - Bodoni. He especially likes the way its generous curves give it a friendly appearance that balances the officiality that the serifs give the face. I told him that its designer Giambattista Bodoni who was known as the King of Printers designed the best of what is known as Modern type styles during the second half of the 18th century. These styles had a strong vertical emphasis and a contrast between fine hairlines and strong bold strokes as well as sharp bracketing into fine serifs.

“But,” Stanley explained, “Many critics at the time turned their noses up at these faces calling them shattering and chilly but used with care this type style really can be romantic and elegant with a presence that adds a tasteful sparkle to headlines and advertising.”

“Also this cut, Bauer Bodoni, released in 1926 by Heinrich Jost was made even more elegant and graceful. It looks especially fine at large sizes and makes a stately presence in any sumptuous magazine, lavish book or dignified website”

“Oh” I said, “you’re really learning fast Stanley, what say you of Helvetica?”

“Don’t get me started on Helvetica!” He snapped.

This is amazing - I’ve dreamed of this day! I just wonder how long the real Lego company lets thes stay in production. It’s something they should really do themselves though. Imagine you could buy the trees and things too!
