The web in 3D – no glasses required

BioDigital

Within the current evolution of the web, the current war of browsers and the endless rise of computer power, internet possibilities seem endless.

WebGL is a Javascript API allowing your browser (well, assuming you’re not using IE though) to render proper 3D using your graphic card.

3D on the web? Nothing new, true. It’s been there for ages, true. Through Flash or Java or whatever, true again. But webGL is natively supported by the latest version of browsers, meanings there’s no political restriction for it to be used on mobile devices.

For the moment, most of websites using webGL are more technical demo than anything you would spend more than 5mn looking at.

But a few of them already brings real value and interest. BioDigital.com is one of then, letting you explore the human anatomy within an impressive level of interactivity.

The need for speed

ostrich_racing

Gone are the days when we sat with our 56k modems, waiting patiently while a web page took 10 seconds plus to load. Your customers are no doubt paying good money for decent broadband connections at home so expect web pages to load near instantaneously.

Here’s a scary figure for you – 57% of consumers will abandon a site after only a 3 second wait [source]. Where do you think they’re going? For a typical query to Google often thousands of relevant results are returned. There’s plenty of options available so there’s no real need to hang about when a page takes it’s time in getting you the content your interested in. If the top result is slow, we’ll likely just try result number two in the list. (more…)

The technological singularity

raymond

The premise of the technological singularity is that in less than 40 years your computer will be cleverer than you are. Can you imagine what that means?

A man called Ray Kurzweil, is largely responsible for developing this concept.

If you’re a fan of TED Talks, you’ll already have heard what Raymond Kurzweil has to say. If you’re not, you need you listen to him talk. I’ve put a few links into this post.

There are two reasons for this post about Kurzweil and his ideas.

HTML5 rocks!

html5sample-01-01

If Steve Jobs claims that the web needs to be cleaned of Flash this proprietary plague to justify Apple ‘control freak’ politics, it’s only fair to admit that the success of iPhones has modified the way we surf the web.

However considering its overall presence on the interweb, the lack of Flash support would have been a real handicap without any alternative. No need to say that HTML 5 kinda comes as a savior, being an open-standard supported by all the web actors. www.html5rocks.com helps us to see with more clarity the large possibilities the new version of HTML does already offer. Thanks Google!
