The technological singularity

raymond

The premise of the technological singularity is that in less than 40 years your computer will be cleverer than you are. Can you imagine what that means?

A man called Ray Kurzweil, is largely responsible for developing this concept.

If you’re a fan of TED Talks, you’ll already have heard what Raymond Kurzweil has to say. If you’re not, you need you listen to him talk. I’ve put a few links into this post.

There are two reasons for this post about Kurzweil and his ideas.

Top 10 social media marketing opportunities

In recent months, the question of social media marketing keeps coming up. So much so that I’m tempted to say that social media is the new viral. I say this not to suggest that it’s a waste of time or a flash in the pan; just that we all need to be careful about what we really want to do with this medium. Rather than jumping in because everyone else is.

The social media space is absolutely huge online. There are statistics upon statistics that prove this (Facebook’s population famously overtook that of the USA at 350million active users) but the fact is that it’s easy to underestimate the reach of these sites. After all they don’t look that big.

So in a generous move, to help us avoid mis-using the opportunity these environments offer, I’ve put together what I think are the top 10 Social Media Marketing opportunities. Here goes…

1. Better brand engagement – By simply making sure you have a basic presence in appropriate social environments, you are inviting people to actively engage with your brand. Last month the Harvard Business Review did a quick experiment to discover whether simply having a presence on Facebook increases emotional connection with a brand by setting up a page for a local coffee shop. It turned out that Facebook did indeed change customer behaviour for the better. Facebook fans generated more positive word of mouth, they visited the outlet 20% more often, they gave the store the highest share of their dining out dollars and were most likely to recommend the shop to friends.

The lesson here is to make sure you have a presence, tell your loyal customers about it and make sure you have the resource to keep your content up to date and relevant.

Our HTC campaign spotted in Kuala Lumpur!

htcKualaLumpur

This year I embarked on a whistle stop tour of parts of South East Asia, travelling through Singapore, Malasyia and Thailand.

While walking along one of the main roads, Bukit Bitang, in Kuala Lumpur, Malasyia, I noticed an advertising campaign for one of our Equator clients, HTC. As I got closer I recognised that this was using the concept that Equator had produced for the HTC Touch HD2. Pretty cool to see something we had worked so hard on, many months ago, in situ thousands of miles away in Kuala Lumpur, where I had least expected it.

OXY Launch wins Dadi!

Drum_OXY

Happy days! At the recent Dadi awards our first integrated campaign picked up the award for the best integrated campaign!

This is a tremendous coup. The OXY launch project that went on air at the beginning of ’09 was the most successful ever for Mentholatum and bucked the trend in the recession driven marketplace by being the only product in the sector to experience growth.

You can read more about the campaign at eqtr.com or watch the TV ad and making of the ad on our YouTube page.

NMA Top 100 – We’ve gone up in the world!

top100_blog

Last year we were 88 in the NMA Top 100, this year we’re 41.

The New Media Age Top 100 Interactive Agencies list was released recently and we were delighted to discover that we came in at an astounding number 41!

What made this especially rewarding for us was that this last year has been a really rough one for all businesses – we all watch the gloomy news every evening. Despite that, we’ve managed to climb an enormous 47 places during that year. Perhaps part of that is down to other agencies not growing as fast as in previous years. Most of it however, is down to our hard work and the continuing commitment from our valued clients.

Please donate to our Movember fund-raising

Hello and welcome to the inaugural Movember celebration at Equator.

We’ve been working hard on the Mos this month; feeding them with Baby Bio to ensure luscious growth, comparing and gently preening them.

To those in the Mo, this month has been a proud one, raising money for a really good cause. However we’ve all been on the receiving end of quite a bit of name calling.

We thought we’d ask you to vote for your favourite nasty nicknames…

The medium is the mess age

medium is the mess age

Quite a long time ago, a chap called Marshall McLuhan said a couple of very clever things. He was born in the early twentieth century and, I guess, by the sixties, he’d grasped the big changes that we’re feeling the culmination of today.
